Tender Opportunity

Merthyr Council is leading on a tender on behalf of the other local authorities in Wales for a short piece of work to develop a cost benefit methodology for Team Around the Family. All 22 LA’s have contributed some funding towards this and Merthyr has asked whether each LA can advertise the Sell2Wales opportunity via their local networks .

Public consultation - proposal for a Major Trauma Network for S & W Wales and S Powys commenced 13 Nov 2017

A public consultation on proposals to develop a major trauma network for South Wales (which includes South and West Wales and South Powys) is now underway.

The consultation period runs for twelve weeks from 9am on 13th November 2017 until 9am on 5th February 2018. During this time the proposals will be made available for the public to review at a series of local public meetings across the region.

In Powys this includes:

1000-1230 on Thursday 16 November 2017, Brecon Library
1000-1230 on Friday 5 January 2018, Ystradgynlais Library
1000-1230 on Tuesday 9 January 2018, Brecon Library
1000-1230 on Friday 12 January 2018, Crickhowell Resource and Information Centre

Major trauma refers to multiple or serious injuries that may result in disability or death. Injuries can include serious head injuries, multiple injuries caused by road traffic accidents, industrial accidents, falls, mass casualty events and knife and gunshot wounds. Whilst numbers of people suffering major trauma in the region are small, evidence shows that if you have a major trauma you have a better chance of survival, a better recovery and quality of life for the future, if you are treated within a major trauma network.

As part of the consultation period members of the public in the region are invited to submit their comments and opinions on the proposals.

The detailed proposals are contained in the public consultation document "A Major Trauma Network for South and West Wales and South Powys" which will be widely available across the region and available to anyone who requests a copy.

More information and the proposals for developing a major trauma network for the region can be downloaded from www.publichealthwales.org/majortraumaconsultation where there is also the opportunity to respond to the proposals.

There are some explanatory videos available at this link on the Public Health Wales website – please take the opportunity to view these.

The proposed major trauma network follows recommendations made by an Independent Clinical Panel which recommended:

§ A major trauma network for the region should be quickly developed
§ The adult and children's major trauma centre should be on the same site
§ The major trauma centre should be at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff
§ Morriston Hospital should become a large trauma unit and should have a lead role in the major trauma network
§ A clear and realistic timetable for putting the trauma network in place should be set

Electronic copies of the full consultation document are available to download viawww.publichealthwales.org/majortraumaconsultation

Powys Trustee Network - Trusted Voices

Whether you are a Trustee of a Charity, the director of a not for profit company or Community Interest Company, or simply a management committee member of a non-incorporated community group, you will be aware of your responsibility for ensuring the good governance and sustainability of your organisation.

There is a plethora of sources of advice and guidance available to help steer you in the management of your organisation - so much so, that it can be difficult seeing the wood for the trees, let alone being able to absorb and assimilate the information available to the needs of your organisation. Though PAVO Development Officers can help here, by streamlining the process of finding information and helping to explain how it fits the context of your organisation, resources are limited and Powys is huge.

There are around 789 voluntary organisations in Powys, and over 4,000 people performing management functions. This suggests that there is a great deal of accumulated experience available in the county that could be used shared and exchanged. But in a county so large, the networking required to facilitate the exchange of that knowledge needs to embrace modern technology.

The Powys Trustee Network aim is to bring the voluntary sector in Powys together online.

The Membership Offer

Membership of the Network is free (as long as your organisation is a member of PAVO – also free!). Membership brings a number of benefits:
Exclusive access to an easy to use online forum that allows you to post questions and comments to members from across Powys – a network of Trusted Voices
A place on the forum to advertise your events to the Network.
Access to our Trusted Voices blog, which carries news and comment on subjects of interest to those performing a trustee role - and the opportunity to share your interesting articles and organisational news.
A regular E-bulletin - sent bi-monthly and synthesising Trusted Voices posts and other news, and linking to external articles.
A Trusted Voices You Tube clip – your opportunity to profile your organisation and tell others why you volunteer as a trustee, what you get out of it and sharing advice with other’s who may be interested in getting involved. A perfect tool for interesting potential new trustees in the work of your voluntary organisation.
Regular information on events and training offers available across the sector.
Half price introductory offer to ‘Being a Trustee’ training delivered by PAVO.

Take the Trusted Voices Pledge

In return, we simply seek two things:
Your active participation - Don’t just sit in the shadows, join in and share your experience.
Pledge your commitment to good governance - Do not let your organisation stagnate.

All network members signing up to this pledge will receive a discrete, Powys Trusted Voices Network lapel pin badge.

Older People's Commissioner's Casebook

One of the ways in which I discharge my statutory functions as Commissioner is through the provision of direct assistance and support to older people. Every week, I am contacted by older people, as well as those who care for and care about them, and provide a range of direct support and assistance through my Casework Team.

I am publishing this casebook in order to highlight the key messages arising from my casework and to demonstrate the impact of the work of my Casework Team on the lives of older people in Wales. In addition to using the issues that arise through my casework to guide and shape my own work as Commissioner, I also raise these issues with public bodies in order to help to inform and shape their current and future practice.

Alongside my wider work as Commissioner, I will continue to use my casework to stand up and speak out for older people across Wales and ensure that our public services empower and support them so they can live fulfilled, independent lives.

Tobacco Control & Pharmacy Leads Help Me Quit update Oct 2017

Quit book for all NHS stop smoking services

With the launch of Help Me Quit, a quit book available in a range of formats is being developed which will be used by all NHS stop smoking services across Wales. A single quit book will bring consistency in the promotion of Help Me Quit services through logo and colours, and also contain the most effective behavioural change techniques and key messages related to quitting smoking.

A task and finish group has been set up, with representation from all Help Me Quit service providers, to jointly develop a single quit book. As well as a review of the evidence on which behavioural change techniques are most effective in written resources, staff from all Help Me Quit service providers were asked to give their views on current resources and what they would like to see included in the new quit book. A big thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the Survey Monkey questionnaire. Your views are essential to helping with the development of content. We are now at the stage of gaining feedback on the draft quit book from smokers who are currently using NHS stop smoking services.

In addition, interviews will be taking place with service users with the aim to develop an understanding of the language they use to describe NHS stop smoking services and ensure that this is reflected in Help Me Quit materials. It is anticipated that this will be completed by the end of November with the quit book being available from December 2017.

For more information please contact Helen Sullivan: Helen.Sullivan@wales.nhs.uk.

Resources

NHS Shared Services will be distributing Help Me Quit cards and card holders over the forthcoming weeks. The Help Me Quit card holders and cards will be sent directly to the primary care lists held by NHS Shared Services which covers General Practices, Pharmacies, Optometrists and Dentists.

Digital resources include but are not limited to: logo (with and without number), digital poster (portrait and landscape), individual icons for services, and interactive icons for choice, location and money saving. There is translated standard text and messages that can be used freely for updating web-content or newsletters.

If you require any Help Me Quit resources digitally to share amongst colleagues or to update your local web-pages/ newsletters etc please email helpmequit@wales.nhs.uk.

Network launch event

The Help Me Quit (HMQ) training and workforce development network is being established for all providers of NHS stop smoking services in Wales. The aim of the network will be to ‘support workforce development and improve the outcomes for smokers’. This will be done by:

1. Identifying training needs and providing opportunities for meeting these needs

2. Providing regular communication on HMQ system developments

3. Providing an online community for NHS smoking cessation providers to network and exchange ideas

4. Providing guidance, advice, information and mutual support for NHS smoking cessation providers and

5. Facilitating collaborative working across NHS smoking cessation service providers

The launch event on the 11th December 2017 will give delegates the opportunity to meet colleagues from other stop smoking service providers (community pharmacies, hospital services and Stop Smoking Wales) and contribute to the future direction of the network. We will also be launching the HMQ single quit book and Louise Ross (Stop Smoking Services Manager, Leicester City, England) will be holding a workshop on electronic cigarettes.

Automatic maternity referrals to Help Me Quit

Following the successful implementation of an automatic referral route into Help Me Quit in ABM UHB, Powys Teaching Health Board is now following suit. This automatic referral route uses the information about smoking in the women’s smoking in Myrddin to create a referral directly to HMQ which ensures timely referrals into NHS stop smoking services. The project is looking to take 4-6 weeks to implement as it is in the last stages with Information Governance and NWIS. This route should offer a seamless referral process ensuring that pregnant smokers are offered expert support. Importantly, it meets NICE Guidance that indicates that all health professionals should offer brief advice and a referral to a stop smoking service to all pregnant smokers. It will also ensure accurate referral data is collected from maternity services for monitoring and identifying service improvements. .

If you have any questions on this project please contact SSW Senior Advisor Stephanie Hill : Stephanie.hill@wales.nhs.uk or Cheryl Richards Public Health Practitioner (Health Improvement Division) Cheryl.richards@wales.nhs.uk
