Folic Awareness Day

It’s Folic Acid Awareness day on 3rd May 2017 and SHINE Cymru is keen to spread the word about the importance of women taking folic acid.

If you would like someone from SHINE Cymru to come along and talk about the work they do to your team, people you help, or attend an event, please get in touch with Helen – 07894394322.

Why?  All women who might become pregnant are advised to take folic acid each day, as recommended by the NHS because it helps reduce the risk of serious birth defects of the brain and spine, called Neural Tube Defects, like spina bifida and anencephaly.

In addition to this on May 3rd SHINE will be doing a call to action for the fortification of flour. Further information about this is available via www.shinecharity.org.uk/equality/campaigns

“Do Not Go Gentle: Gerontology and a Good Old Age”

The Centre for Innovative Ageing at Swansea University will be hosting the 2017 British Society of Gerontology (BSG) annual conference from the 5-7th July 2017. The conference is called “Do Not Go Gentle: Gerontology and a Good Old Age” with the theme being the “Art of Ageing”.

On the evening of the 6th they will be having a gala dinner for up to 350 guests and are looking to engage with older people groups and residential care homes to create centre pieces for the tables. These will reflect what the older people see, feel, and experience with regards to ageing, living in Wales & ageing in Wales.

This would take the form of a competition for 35 entries which would be judged on the night by Beti George. All entries would receive a thank you letter and a picture of their entry in situ, helping make this event very special. The winning team would receive the letter and pictures as well as a cut crystal glass from the Centre for Innovative Ageing as a token of our sincere thanks.

The centre pieces have to be received in Swansea by Friday 2nd June 2017. They should be no larger than 40cm x 40cm in diameter and 30cm in height. These dimensions account for a solid structure with additional height possible with single strands (where people can still see over / through them for example).

Tobacco control news: Help Me Quit brand launch

Forthcoming changes to NHS stop smoking services in Wales are designed to make it easier for more smokers to get the help they need to successfully quit.

You may be aware that the Welsh Government set an ambitious target to treat 5% of smokers in Wales through NHS stop smoking services and to reduce the prevalence of smoking to 16% by 2020.  In order to help achieve these targets, the Tobacco Control Strategic Board’s Smoking Cessation Sub-Group is leading development of an integrated system for stop smoking services.  The first step is to launch a single brand for all services in Wales, called Help Me Quit.

If you have any queries about the integration of services or the launch of Help Me Quit, please do not hesitate to get in contact with the project team via helpmequit@wales.nhs.uk.

To understand the importance of person centred, outcomes focused safeguarding work.

To ensure that staff involved in supporting people in the community and care settings across all sectors are aware of different types of financial abuse, including capacity; the groups most vulnerable to abuse; the range of people who might perpetrate such abuse; their responsibilities to act to prevent financial abuse and to report it where it is suspected.

The Right Way: A Children's Rights Approach in Wales

From: Children's Commissioner for Wales - Sally Holland

Dear Colleague, Re: The Right Way: A Child’s Rights Approach We live in an era where public sector leaders in Wales are expected to stretch the public purse like never before. Finding new ways of dealing with increased demands and limited resource is a challenge I want to help overcome.
This new guide is intended to bring to life the real, positive impact public services in Wales can have on delivering a Children’s Rights Approach – an approach that will have meaningful impact on how Wales responds to and safeguards the long term needs of its children.
As Wales’ children’s champion I aspire to a Wales where all children and young people have an equal chance to be the best they can be. But the reality in Wales is that too many children are living in poverty, many children do not have the opportunities to develop their talents and potential, too often children do not know they have rights, and despite being experts on their own lives, children are often excluded from decisions that affect them and are often powerless to hold to account decision-makers or those responsible for services.
This is why I have collaborated with the Wales Observatory on Human Rights of Children and Young People to create this principled and practical framework that will enable more children and young people to be better involved in public services. This is a framework which will lead to better decision making, ensuring there’s a real focus on the particular needs of children whose voices can be lost or silenced, creating an environment where public services are accountable to all of its service users.
If you require additional information about any aspect of this guide, please do not hesitate to get in touch
I want to see a Wales which recognises its children and young people as active citizens with an important contribution to make to their communities and the nation. I’ll look forward to working with you to realise this ambition.
With best wishes Sally Holland Children’s Commissioner for Wales

Free carbon monoxide awareness workshop

The Gas Safe Charity is running a series of free half day workshops across the UK aimed at ANY organisation that deliver services in the homes of vulnerable people.

They are in Swansea on the 25th April and Cardiff on the 28th June.

Low levels of carbon monoxide have been linked to increased risk of falls and dementia. Front line staff and volunteers have a key preventative role but there is also a duty of care for employers. A range of organisations have attended past Think CO workshops and have now introduced carbon monoxide awareness into their induction and general training. There is usually only one place per organisation per workshop and each participant will receive a training pack, buffet lunch and a free CO detector for each organisation. ASIST suicide intervention training

Monday 24th & Tuesday 25th April 10:00am to 5:00pm
Venue CRIC centre, Crickhowell, NP8 1BN

Cost £100 per person for the two day course to include handbook, refreshments and accreditation.

Assist suicide intervention background:  Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is for everyone 16 or older—regardless of prior experience—who wants to be able to provide suicide first aid. Shown by major studies to significantly reduce suicidality, the ASIST model teaches effective intervention skills while helping to build suicide prevention networks in the community.

What is ASIST 11?      Since its creation in 1983, ASIST has undergone numerous updates to reflect the latest research and feedback from the suicide prevention community. ASIST 11 became the current version of ASIST in June 2013. While older versions of ASIST still provide proven life-saving skills, ASIST 11 features several significant upgrades. For those trained in ASIST 10 or an earlier version, signing up for an ASIST 11 training is recommended. In the meantime, here is a quick overview of some of the differences, and a guide to how those trained in ASIST 10 or earlier versions can work with those trained in ASIST 11:

Working with ASIST 11-trained caregivers  -    ASIST 11 is fundamentally the same as any version of ASIST, and remains true to ASIST principles. If you need to work or consult with people who have taken ASIST 11, expect them to:
be open, honest and direct about suicide,
exercise care in expressing their own values about suicide,
do whatever they can to respect a person at risk’s decision-making rights,
appreciate the importance of letting the person at risk talk about suicide,
appreciate that some part of a person at risk wants to live,
value collaboration with the person at risk,
consider things that might threaten the person at risk’s safety,
develop a plan that fits the immediate safety needs of the person at risk, and,
make sure that the person at risk understands the plan and is committed to carrying it out

Have your say - Community Hubs in Powys

Credu (formerly known as Powys Carers Service) has been supporting Carers across Powys since 2003, and currently work with 3,000 Carers across the county.

We can all be Carers at various times in our lives, so it makes a lot of sense for us to do what we can to help each other.

At Credu (www.credu.cymru) they believe that being a committed carer leaves far too many people exhausted, unnecessarily isolated, and without sufficient opportunities for essential recreation and self-expression. They are determined to address this but know this can only be achieved in association with Carers and their communities.

In July 2016 Credu opened their very first charity shop and community hub in Machynlleth. They are now planning to develop additional hub(s) or community enterprises(s) in or near to every key settlement where their staff are based and local carers and their friends and neighbours will find a hospitable place to meet, enjoy a cuppa and a chat, offer support and share experiences. They'd like to see neighbours within their local communities engaging and helping each other.

Your input is key as part of their research and development and they value any feedback and suggestions as to how they could make this happen in your area.
