Dementia Project
Age Cymru is working with the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales on research to hear the voices and experiences of older people with dementia, their families and carers.
They ask for your assistance in identifying people who would be willing to speak to them about their day to day experiences of living with dementia, the impact it has on their lives and the support currently available to them.
They are looking to speak both to people living with dementia themselves and the people who care or support them. These conversations can be conducted separately or together.
The conversations will be conducted by our fully trained engagement team and will be extremely informal. Their staff are alert to the sensitivity of the topics which might be covered and will take a flexible approach based upon a person’s situation. They are using a framework based on the ‘Talking Points: personal outcomes approach’ developed in Scotland, in which the participants guide the conversations wherever possible.
They are seeking to hold these conversations between now and the end of September 2015 with a report to be produced by the end of the year.
The experiences they gather will help to shape public services and assist policy makers in taking the action needed to meet the needs of older people living with dementia in Wales and make our communities truly dementia supportive.
If you are able to help please contact Kathy Lye at Age Cymru on kathy.lye@agecymru.org.uk or 029 2043 1570. If you would like to discuss this research further or have any questions then you can contact Graeme Francis, Project Manager, on 029 2043 1547.

Social Services and Wellbeing Act: Update on the Population Assessments Toolkit
As some of you may be aware, SSIA and PHW have been working together to create a toolkit to support the development of the population assessment reports required under the Social Services and Wellbeing Act. They have been working closely with partners in national and local government, health boards and the third sector to find out what support and assistance they may need to help them meet the requirements set out in the Code of Practice and Regulations. This is provided to ensure all stakeholders are informed about this work.
The Welsh Government Technical Group have completed their report into population assessments, which has been taken into account in the development of the toolkit. A copy of the final report can be found on http://bit.ly/1KU8QGp
They recently held the first meeting of the Steering Group on Population Assessment Reports, where the outline for a toolkit was discussed and agreed by members. The synergies with other strategies and legislation, particularly around the wellbeing plans set out in the new Wellbeing of Future Generations Act, were also discussed. It was also agreed a separate workshop on datasets will be held this Autumn to discuss some of the issues around identifying, collecting and analysing statistical data. It was also agreed that a full copy of the scoping report would be useful for group members.
Next Steps:
They have identified a pilot region and will be working with them to develop, test and refine a toolkit. The pilot phase will be completed by late Autumn and a final toolkit will be available by Spring 2016. They have added a section to our website to keep people updated on the progress of the report which can be viewed here. They will keep you up to date of all developments and welcome any thoughts or suggestions you may have as the project progresses. For any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Rebecca Cicero, Programme Co-ordinator

Advance Statements for Crisis Planning
Possibly for the first time in history, the new Mental Health Act Code of Practice (April 2015), for England, has included a section that puts a responsibility on Mental Health Practitioners to encourage‘patients’ to set out their wishes in advance as ‘statements’ or ‘decisions’. While advance statements are not legally binding professionals are advised that they ‘should make all practical efforts to comply with these preferences and explain to patients why their preferences have not been met.’ Read on .....

Preventing homelessness: a seminar of good practice
A seminar of best practice
Tuesday 29 September 2015, Merthyr Tydfil
Preventing homelessness has rarely been more challenging for all agencies working to keep people in their homes. Yet there are some brilliant services achieving amazing results in these austerity-driven times.
Supported by the Oak Foundation, our event, Preventing homelessness: a seminar of good practice is bringing together some of the most innovative approaches to homelessness prevention from across Wales and the UK.
‘Temporary Accommodation Survival Guide’, a resource to help people cope and increase their chances of making it through to settled accommodation, will be launched at the event. The Guide has been developed by people who have been in temporary accommodation themselves and know first-hand what the pitfalls are.
Hear about the results of their research on prison leavers and people with autism.
Fee £50, free places for service users. http://us7.campaign-archive1.com/?u=292baa835dba10b6ad2693375&id=af8dd4c2f4&e=166efe63d9

Free Hate Crime Awareness Sessions
PAVO is hosting two free training sessions delivered by Victim Support at the Conference Room, Unit 30, Ddole Road Enterprise Park, Llandrindod Wells, Powys, LD1 6DF. The training will be on Monday 21st September 2015 with a choice of 10.00am to 12.00pm or 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm
A hate crime or hate incident is committed because of who you are or who someone thinks you are. Quite simply, if because of your age, disability, sexuality, religion, ethnicity, gender(including gender identity) or lifestyle choice (e.g. Goth) someone or a group of people targets you, commits a crime against you, bullies you or harasses you, then this is a hate crime or hate incident.
The training will -
Give information on the different types of Hate Crimes and Incidents
Inform of the impact on victims and the support available.
Set out the ways in which to report Hate Crimes and Hate Incidents
The training may demonstrate to grant aid bodies that your organisation is carrying out work to achieve your Equality Policy. A General Duty of the Equality Act 2010 is to 'Eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation.'

New Service for Powys: RNIB’s Eye Care Liaison Officer
Keira Brooks is Powys’ new Eye Care Liaison Officer (ECLO). Kiera offers support, information and guidance to anyone in Powys affected by sight loss. More information is available on the attached flyers.
Keira Brooks, Eye Care Liaison Officer
m: 07701 295138 t: 01597 827772 e: keira.brooks@rnib.org.uk
Kiera’s focus has been on designing a rural community version of the traditional clinic-based ECLO role. Due to the geography of Powys it has become apparent that both primary and secondary care should be given equal standing in the identification and support of patients. This is unique to Powys. In other areas, ECLO’s work is primarily, if not entirely, within secondary care. Working within primary care means ECLO patients are identified at the earliest opportunity and can be supported throughout their eye care journey. It also means that patients who are not using secondary care services, or who have been discharged, can also access ECLO support.
Due to the vast area Powys covers the ECLO will only attend the clinics in south and mid Powys. A telephone support service will be operating for north Powys patients. In year two of the project the capacity and scope of the ECLO will be reviewed and consideration given to expanding the reach to north Powys clinics.
