Kiera’s focus has been on designing a rural community version of the traditional clinic-based ECLO role. Due to the geography of Powys it has become apparent that both primary and secondary care should be given equal standing in the identification and support of patients. This is unique to Powys. In other areas, ECLO’s work is primarily, if not entirely, within secondary care. Working within primary care means ECLO patients are identified at the earliest opportunity and can be supported throughout their eye care journey. It also means that patients who are not using secondary care services, or who have been discharged, can also access ECLO support.
Due to the vast area Powys covers the ECLO will only attend the clinics in south and mid Powys. A telephone support service will be operating for north Powys patients. In year two of the project the capacity and scope of the ECLO will be reviewed and consideration given to expanding the reach to north Powys clinics.
