First 1000 Days of Life

Are you a parent or an expectant parent?

The early years of a child's life from pregnancy to age 2 are vital to their physical, mental and emotional health and development. Problems that occur in this period can not only affect a person’s childhood, but the rest of their life: their physical and mental health, their ability to learn, communicate and manage their emotions.

All parents need support during this time from their families and friends, but also from local public services (e.g. midwives, GPs, children centres and health visitors). These services can help to identify problems in a child’s development and provide support for parents and families to help make sure children are given the best start in life.

The House of Commons Health and Social CareCommittee who are responsible for holding the Government to account, are seeking parents’ views on the challenges, and the support, they received during the first years of their child’s life, from conception to age 2.

How can you help?
The Committee is interested in hearing from parents from all walks of life, particularly those who:
·  Live in poorly connected or rural areas
·  Are first-time parents
·  Are single parents
·  Do not have English as a first language

Join our online discussion

Your answers will be used to inform the Committee’s scrutiny of the Government.

You will be required to answer a few questions and share your experience on our MumsNet Web Forum

Christmas Message from PAVO Wellbeing

As we race to the last working day before our Christmas holidays, I’m mindful this year that it falls on the shortest day of the year 21st December. For me, this day, the Winter Solstice  has all sorts of meanings.

Over Christmas many of us stay warm - lighting fires, eating hearty food and enjoying the holiday season, whatever tradition we celebrate. We make special efforts to be with family, friends and neighbours, with our Christmas lighting ceremonies or food festivals, Christmas markets, choirs, church and concerts.

But at this time of year I’m also aware of many people in Powys who may be socially isolated, living with depression, living on their own, people who are sad or lonely, who are in need. I’m very mindful and grateful for the work of Sector colleagues who are on the front line, giving support to people. It is the season generally of good will, of sharing, of compassion and of giving. I hope that at this time you will feel the abundance of receiving yourselves and in giving, feel you are filled up with light, warmth and energy as we head into the New Year.

Wishing you and your families, colleagues, clients and friends a very happy and warm holiday season and a heartfelt New Year celebration.  We look forward very much to working with you all in 2019.

Freda Lacey, Senior Officer, Health and Wellbeing Team, PAVO

Please note that PAVO offices will be closed from 5pm on Friday 21st December 2018 and will reopen at 9am on Wednesday 2nd January 2019.

CARER AWARENESS E-LEARNING COURSE

Social Care Wales and NHS Wales have jointly developed a Carer Awareness E-learning Course.

This e-learning course aims to raise understanding and awareness of carers by exploring key topics:

  • who is a carer;
  • the types of support carers provide;
  • the impact of a caring role can have;
  • what carers need
  • carers’ rights and entitlements, the law and where to find out what support is available

With over 370,000 carers in Wales and 3 in 5 people providing care for someone at some point in their lives, carers make up most of the support given to people within our society.

Whilst some of these carers are aware of the support available to them, others will not see themselves as carers. Therefore, identification of carers is vital for them to know where they can find help. The earlier this identification happens the better to support carers’ health and well-being.

The course will take about 45 minutes to complete, and following successful completion, a certificate will be downloadable for personal development records.

Social Prescribing learning needs study- participants required.

Do you have a role as a community navigator, link worker or similar? Or do you send or receive a social prescription and deliver a community asset? Carolyn Wallace and David Pontin have been commissioned by Health Education and Improvement Wales to complete a study exploring the learning needs for those practicing social prescribing. If you have a role as a community link worker, community navigator (or similar), make or receive referrals for a social prescription then we need your perspective on the learning needs for social prescribing.

It will be an online study using three separate short exercises.

  • The first asks you to complete the following sentence:  to help me in my social prescribing role my learning needs are….
  • The second invites you to sort and label a collection of statements.
  • The third asks you to rate the statements against two scales - importance and availability.

The study takes place during December to February 2019. Please contact Carolyn Wallace if you are interested in taking part. Carolyn.wallace@southwales.ac.uk

The Future of Community Pharmacies

Promoting Local Collaboration and Securing the Benefits of Holistic Community Care
Central London
Wednesday 20th March 2019
The role of community pharmacies in promoting the health and wellbeing of UK citizens has expanded rapidly. Currently, over 11,688 community pharmacies exist in England (Public Health England, 2016). Roughly 1.2 million individuals visit a local pharmacy with a health related concern every day. The total amount of items dispensed between 2017 and 2018 was a recorded 1,013.8 million (General Pharmaceutical Services, 2018). Across a range of communities, pharmacies have become instrumental components of the local healthcare infrastructure.

In recent years, the Government has sought to utilise community pharmacies to overcome increasing demand for primary care services. In 2018, NHS England launched its new, ‘Stay Well Pharmacy’ campaign to promote the role of pharmacies as frontline sources of clinical advice for minor health concerns including ‘sore throats, coughs, colds, tummy troubles and teething’ (NHS England, 2018). Moreover, the NHS Five Year Forward View, initially launched in 2014, has promoted heightened coordination between healthcare bodies in an attempt to improve existing services. The Pharmacy Integration Fund (2016) has assisted the delivery of deeper collaboration between medical institutions. Predominantly this has been through deploying pharmacy professionals into alternative care settings such as general practice, integrated urgent care (IUC) hubs and care homes. During 2018, NHS England has also been trialling new programmes intended to further embed pharmacies into local care networks via new Sustainability and Transformation Plans (STPs) and Integrated Care Systems (ICSs).

Although pharmacies have assumed a central role in the UK healthcare provision, a number of challenges threaten their future viability. As the UK prepares to leave the European Union, the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee have raised concerns within its report, The Impact of Brexit on the Pharmaceutical Sector (2018), over potential skills shortages in the sector. NHS England’s pilot integration scheme is due to end in January 2019, raising questions over the prospects for future collaboration between local public health services. Moreover, a reported 2.1 million A&E visits in 2016/17 were for self-treatable conditions, illustrating the need for further campaigning to ensure local communities understand how to engage with pharmacy services (NHS Digital, 2017).

Residing at the heart of their communities, pharmacies have been called upon to support more robust public health services. This timely symposium provides a range of public policy and health professionals including pharmacists, health and wellbeing boards and clinical commissioners with an invaluable forum to examine how pharmacies can deliver stronger and more efficient primary care support. Delegates will also explore the evolving role of pharmacies within their communities and co-develop strategies to embed them at the centre of local public healthcare.

Delegates Will:
Explore the evolving role of community pharmacies in supporting local public health and explore how to safeguard their contribution to national health and wellbeing
Co-develop strategies to promote heightened collaboration between local pharmacies, primary care institutions and medical professionals
Determine the impact of emerging technologies on community pharmacy services and care provision
Assess the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee’s report, The Impact of Brexit on the Pharmaceutical Sector and examine the broader risks of the UK departing from the European Union
Develop methods to strengthen pharmacy staff training to ensure the delivery of quality clinical services
Engage in the sharing of best practice regarding local level promotion of existing pharmacy services and functions
Examine the remaining obstacles to public accessibility and consider methods of facilitating the public’s use of pharmacy services
Promote the role of community pharmacies as local hubs, discussing measures to further uphold their broader social and economic contributions
