Powys Carers Matter Report
A Message from Credu Connecting Carers:
Thanks so VERY much for coming to the Powys Carers Matter event back in November. Here is the event report as promised - visit www.credu.cymru/carers-matter-report
It’s tricky to do justice to the passion and insights of the many participants. Our Chair, Denise, reflected on the event and the passion of the Carers saying ‘there’s certainly a will….and where there is a will there is a way’. We think she captured the spirit of the moment and it feels like we have an amazing opportunity to work with both Carers and service providers together to make a difference to the key issues Carers are raising.
Respite was such a key issue, we are inviting you to discuss your ideas and insights with key decision makers in Powys on the 23rd February back at the Metropole – visit www.credu-respite-matters.eventbrite.co.uk . We think this is a significant opportunity – so if you need any support to pop along such as respite / travel / expenses, please do not hesitate to drop us a line.
Are these recommendations reflecting your voices? Do the next steps in the report summary reflect where you what to take these issues? Are there other ways you would like to be involved? Drop us and e-mail / or phone call – we’d love to hear your thoughts.

Dementia Pathways – Housing’s Role Key Research Findings.
During 2016 CIH Scotland commissioned Arneil Johnston to deliver the second phase of its housing and dementia programme. This phase of the research focused on improving the links between housing organisations and partners in health, social care and the third sector, with a specific emphasis on the role of the housing professional in meeting the needs of those living with dementia. It is hoped that the outcomes of this study will enable an improved understanding of housing’s role in dementia care, by setting out clearly the contribution that housing staff and services can make.

BC Disabled People Access Certificate Petition
FROM: SIMON GREEN (Chair, Bridgend Coalition of Disabled People)
The Food Hygiene Certificate in Wales was voluntary when first introduced, but is now mandatory! If our petition is successful then it will only be voluntary to begin with, but could still encourage people to improve the services they offer and make more of an effort to be accessible for all.
We have had backing from all political parties in Wales and last week Suzy Davies AM tabled a short debate in the Senedd which was received extremely well. The idea has also featured on BBC and ITV Wales News over last month.
Although the Petition originated in Bridgend area, if a success we firmly believe it will benefit disabled people across Wales, and hopefully one day across the UK and we would love to have the support and backing of your organisation.
So please take a look at link below and we hope you sign and share. Also please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions, queries or criticisms.
Thanks, SIMON GREEN (Chair, Bridgend Coalition of Disabled People) 07719 889364

‘Scores on the Doors’ petition
I am messaging to inform you all of a petition put together by members of Bridgend Coalition of Disabled People which has already picked up almost 1,900 online signatures and many more on paper and we would love your support.
As Chair of BCDP and a Board Member with Disability Wales I am delighted our petition has been given the go ahead by the Welsh Assembly and will hopefully encourage premises across Wales to improve access for customers with disabilities.
A couple of months ago members came up with an idea of a petition calling for premises in Wales to be awarded an Access Certificate similar to the Food Hygiene Certificate with premises displaying a sign from 0 to 5 depending how accessible and disabled friendly they are. Getting a high number would not just be about wheelchair access, we also want to look at improving services for those with learning disabilities and sensory impairments.
The Food Hygiene Certificate has encouraged eating establishments to improve the cleanliness of their food preparation. We believe that if premises were awarded high numbers for having a wheelchair accessible building, accessible toilets, changing place facilities, hearing loops, braille or large print menus, staff using sign language and staff trained in Disability Equality and Autism Awareness it would encourage them to improve and give better services to all disabled customers.
You could get high numbers for having all or some of the above with extra symbols below number to show which services premises offer. For example signs to show building contains a wheelchair accessible toilet and a braille menu.
We would love it if you could sign petition by going to the link below. Link also gives more info on our idea and how it will work. Please also feel free so share link amongst colleagues, members, friends and family. I will also happily email you a copy of the paper certificate if you wish.
If we get 5,000 to sign it will result in a full debate in the Senedd on the issue.

Support for Young Adult Carers in Wales – a Call for Evidence
The Learning and Work Institute are currently gathering evidence of the support available for young adult carers in Wales.
Young adult carers are young people aged 16-24 who provide unpaid care to someone, usually a member of their family, on a regular basis. Young adult carers may have specific needs as they transition from school to further education, employment and training.
This research is an important step towards better understanding the needs of young adult carers in Wales and the support currently available to them. The resulting report will provide recommendations for improving policy and practice in this area.
Who Should Respond? They are seeking responses from organisations directly involved with supporting young adult carers in Wales, including (but not limited to):
A carers service
A college
A training provider
A HE institution
An employer
A support service
A local authority
A charitable/voluntary organisation
The questions are routed depending on what kind of organisation you belong to.
Please take note of this if you are completing the word document version of the call for evidence.
Why take part? This is a great opportunity to contribute to policy and practice concerning young adult carers in Wales. In doing so, you are ensuring the right support is in place to help young adult carers’ overcome barriers to progression into employment and further education.
Please respond to our online call for evidence by Wednesday 28th February 2018.
For more information please contact calvin.lees@learningandwork.org.uk.

Welsh Government relieve winter pressures in the NHS
http://gov.wales/newsroom/heal th-and-social-services/2018/ investment/?lang=en
The Minister confirmed part of the additional £10m the Welsh Government has made available to relieve winter pressures in the NHS is being used to ensure home care services are in place to enable patients who need ongoing support in the community to leave hospital earlier. The funding will also support people to remain in their own homes, avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions, wherever possible.
This funding is in addition to the £60m the Welsh Government is investing in the Integrated Care Fund each year, which is helping to reduce pressures on vital NHS and social care services. The fund is helping to drive integrated working between health, social care, housing and the third sector for a range of preventative purposes, including supporting older people to maintain their independence.

Age Alliance Wales survey
During 2017 Age Alliance Wales, a coalition of 21 national voluntary organisations committed to working together to improve the lives of older people, conducted a survey which aimed to capture the opinions of older people, their carers and the professionals who work alongside them of their experiences accessing support and care services since the introduction of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014. This lead to a well-received report setting out our findings and a number of recommendations for change (this is available on our website at agealliancewales.org.uk)
We now aim to expand on that research and have therefore compiled two online surveys, both of which will be available for completion until 31st March 2018.
One survey is aimed at members of Age Alliance Wales, but the second seeks the opinions of Local Authority and associated staff with responsibility for, or knowledge of, the commissioning of social services for older people since the introduction of the Act. This is fillable online at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/AAW04 , or alternatively https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/AAW01 if an English language version is preferred.
We would be extremely grateful if you could either take the opportunity to complete the survey yourself or, if more appropriate, pass it on to others who you feel to be appropriate. You should be assured that all responses with be completely anonymous.

Flu remains at high levels
Confirmed cases of influenza (flu) in Wales have increased again this week, and remain at high levels. There have been further outbreaks of flu in hospitals and care homes. Flu cases are at the highest levels seen since 2010/11.
In the week ending 22 January 2018 consultation rates for influenza like illness was 74.7 per 100,000 population, indicating high levels. This is an increase of 15% from 65 per 100,000 the previous week, and 36 per 100,000 the week before.
There have been 37 outbreaks of flu and respiratory illnesses reported in care homes and hospitals in Wales so far this winter, this includes 12 outbreaks provisionally reported in the last week. Flu can spread easily, especially in places like care homes and hospitals, where individuals are often very vulnerable to flu and its complications.
Limited stocks of vaccine remain available currently. Those in at risk groups not yet vaccinated are advised to speak to their GP surgery or community pharmacy as soon as possible.
Dr Frank Atherton, Chief Medical Officer for Wales, said:
“Flu can be a serious condition, especially for those in risk groups such as pregnant women, those aged 65 or over or with a long term health condition.
“If you catch flu please help to stop the virus spreading by staying away from other people if possible while you are ill, especially if they are very old, very young, pregnant or have a long term health condition. Follow the Catch it, Bin it, Kill it advice.”
· Catch it: always use a tissue to cough or sneeze into
· Bin it: dispose of the tissue after use
· Kill it: then wash your hands or use hand sanitizer to kill any flu viruses
If you think you might have flu, you can reduce the risk of spreading it to others. Most healthy people with flu can care for themselves at home. They should drink plenty of fluids, take paracetamol or ibuprofen, keep warm and rest. Symptoms usually resolve in about a week.
Stay away from others as much as possible - especially people who are at increased risk of complications. While you are unwell avoid visiting hospitals or care homes to help reduce the chances of spreading flu in these settings.
Advice on self-care is available on www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk or from community pharmacists or NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47 (or 111 in areas where the 111 Wales service is available).
Most people do not need to contact their GP surgery if they think they might have flu, but people who are more vulnerable to complications should get early advice. Those who are aged 65 or over, have a long-term health condition, are pregnant or are worried about a young child should seek advice from their GP surgery, as should those whose symptoms are deteriorating or are not improving after a week.
People should only attend A&E or call an ambulance if they need urgent care, for example feeling short of breath, chest pain or coughing up blood, or have other serious symptoms, or deteriorate quickly.
Dr Richard Roberts, Head of the Vaccine Preventable Disease Programme at Public Health Wales, added:
“Vaccination is the single best way to protect against catching flu or spreading it. With flu vaccine still available in Wales I encourage all those eligible for the free NHS vaccine to get it as soon as possible.”
Vaccination against flu is offered free of charge by the NHS to people who are aged 65 or over, are pregnant, have certain long-term health conditions, or are unpaid carers. Nasal spray flu vaccine is also still available for children who were age 2 or 3 years on 31st August 2017. In the last two weeks one in 50 additional 2 and 3 years old children in Wales has received the nasal spray flu vaccine, bringing the total immunised to 48%.
Flu vaccine is also recommended for frontline health and social care workers to protect them and those in their care.

Editor’s notes
There are a number of different strains of flu currently circulating in Wales. The dominant types are influenza A(H3N2) and influenza B. The A(H3N2) strain and a B strain circulated in Australia last year. This year’s flu vaccine contains protection against A(H3N2) and also one or two B strains of the virus, depending on which vaccine has been given (some flu vaccines contain three strains and some contain four strains).
A flu vaccine is free for everyone from six months of age who has: diabetes, a long term chest condition such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), moderate or severe asthma, a chronic heart condition, chronic liver disease, kidney disease (from stage 3), a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more (adults only), had a stroke or a mini stroke, or have another neurological disorder, an immune system that isn’t working well, and had their spleen removed or have a spleen that isn’t working very well.
This year, the children’s vaccination programme has been extended to include children in school year 4. Eligible children are those aged two or three (age on 31 August 2017) and those in reception class and school years 1 - 4 in primary school.
Last year in 2016-17 flu vaccine uptake in two and three year olds was 45.3%, and in children aged between four and seven years was 66.9%. Uptake in those aged under 65 years in clinical risk groups was 46.9%, and in those aged 65 and over was 66.7%.
In a typical winter in the UK flu will cause thousands of deaths. Public Health Wales monitors the increase in deaths during the winter months caused by flu and other winter illnesses. Up to the end of the second week of January 2018 the number of deaths recorded each week was within normal expected levels and not unusual compared to previous flu seasons.
