Social Care Wales: What should our improvement priorities be?
From Social Care Wales
Social Care Wales: What should our improvement priorities be?
Who are Social Care Wales?
From April 2017, the Care Council for Wales will be reconstituted as Social Care Wales and will gain a new function in leading and driving improvement across the whole of the social care sector. Welsh Government has asked SSIA to work with the Care Council for Wales and stakeholders across the social care sector to identify key initial priorities for improvement for Social Care Wales. Work has already been done to identify what the early priorities need to be. We are now looking to explore in greater detail how Social Care Wales will take a lead role in these areas, driving forward change and improvement.
There are a number of key principles underpinning Social Care Wales that need to be considered when looking at the kind of work we will be doing
o Improving wellbeing
o Outcome focussed
o Focussing on the evidence
o Supporting and challenging service providers and service commissioners
o Listening to the citizen
o Championing the social care sector
What do we want to know?
There are three key areas where we will be focussing improvement. These are:
- Dementia
- Looked after children
- Domiciliary (Home) Care
We also want to know if there are any other priorities we should be focussing on.
Questions
What should Social Care Wales be doing to lead improvement in these areas?
What needs to improve so that the citizen has a greater voice in improvements in social care?
Are there any other areas that Social Care Wales should focus on in the first few years?
We are keen to have input directly from people who use services and their carers If anyone is holding any meetings or running any local support or engagement groups with people who use services and their carers over the next 2 weeks, could you please consider asking the questions above and on the attached sheet. The particular focus is on dementia, looked after children and domiciliary care but we’d also like to hear if there are other priorities that Social Care Wales needs to address.
Please send any responses to rebecca.cicero@wlga.org.uk by Tuesday 5 July 2016

Code of Professional Practice information for service users and carers
As part of Care Council for Wales recent campaign to raise awareness of the Code of Professional Practice for Social Care amongst the public, titled 'Our Code is not a Secret', the Care Council have produced a leaflet outlining what people receiving support can expect from social care workers in Wales. The leaflet also gives guidance on what to do if people feel the standard of care they receive does not meet what is set out in the Code.
They aim to distribute the leaflet to service users, their families and carers across Wales to ensure they have access to this information. Is this something you would be interested in helping us with?

Local Voices Needed for Health Watchdog
Do you have an interest in your local NHS? Do you want to improve
local health services in your area? Do you have 3-5 days free per month
to become a volunteer?
If you answered YES to the above questions, then please consider becoming
a volunteer of the Community Health Councils (CHC) in Wales.
CHCs represent the independent voice of patients and the public who use the
health service in Wales.
They play an important role in influencing the way services are planned and delivered, to ensure the best possible health and wellbeing outcomes for all people in Wales. CHC members are local volunteers who act as the eyes and ears of patients and the public, listening to their concerns and working with the health service to improve the quality of patient care. They are looking for enthusiastic volunteers from communities across Wales to join us for this important service. They welcome: all ages, ethnic backgrounds, genders, people with disabilities and all religious affiliations. The most important requirement is a genuine interest in improving health services for your community. Some key skills which would be useful include: an interest in local health issues, being able to work in a team and with a diverse range of people plus good communication skills. Successful candidates will be given full training and support to enable them to carry out their role and any ‘out of pocket’ expenses such as travel will be reimbursed.
Closing date for applications is June 13th 2016 and interviews will take place on w/c July 4th 2016.
For further information about CHCs or to lodge an expression of interest please contact the Board of CHCs on: 02920235558 or enquiries@waleschc.org.uk or visit the website http://www.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/899/page/71611
