The Welsh Government have launched a five year vision for Maternity Care in Wales (2019-2024).
The vision aims to ensure that ‘pregnancy and childbirth are a safe and positive experience and parents are supported to give their children the best start in life’.
The Welsh Government aim to achieve the vision through the following five principles of maternity care;
- Family centred care.
- Safe and effective care.
- Continuity of carer.
- Skilled multi-professional teams.
- Sustainable quality services.
Commenting, the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Director for Wales, Helen Rogers said; “The RCM very much welcomes the launch of this vision for maternity services in Wales and its encouraging to see clear actions and responsibilities outlined within the vision.
“Leadership development has also been included as a priority and we are pleased with that, as we know this is key to developing and delivering safe, high quality maternity services.
“The commitment to providing electronic maternity records for all pregnant women in Wales is important and will towards improving communication between all health care professionals, ensuring important details are not missed and in turn improving safety.
“There is also a strong emphasis on personalised care which will enable better choice for women in Wales particularly, when it comes to place of birth and in line with NICE guidance, low risk women will be given the choice of all four birth settings and given information about local birth outcomes to support their decision making.
“Putting women at the centre of their own care and allowing them, to make informed decisions about their pregnancy and birth is crucial.
“The commitment to continuity of carer – that is women seeing the same midwife or small group of midwives throughout and after their pregnancy – is very important as the evidence shows that women have a safer and better pregnancy and birth when they get this continuity.
“The RCM supports plans to develop an all Wales multi-disciplinary working group which when developed will support the implementation of continuity of carer models across Wales.
“What is important now is that we have right amount staff with access to the right training, to support the safe delivery of this ambitious maternity vision for women and their families,"in Wales.”
