Welsh Language Support Offer

The implications of the Welsh Language Legislation & its associated standards are beginning to be seen & felt. Currently, local authorities have received compliance letters from the commissioner. In time, other bodies will also receive letters. This means that commissioned / contracted / funded services from these bodies will need to demonstrate equivalent compliance.

When Carl Cooper, Chief Executive of PAVO floated the idea of PAVO leading a consortium approach to purchasing eg translation services, he didn't receive any response from organisations, so hasn't taken it forward. He'd be happy to pursue this further if there was sufficient interest. PAVO is not aware of any source of funding that would help with translation etc. Looking ahead, it will be increasingly important to factor in the cost of bilingual provision when bidding for contracts, grants etc.

As a guide, PAVO currently pays £45 per 1000 words of translated text for written translation. For Simultaneous translation – £30 per hour / 60p per mile – which includes setting up and clearing up after a meeting (no charge for travelling time). Cost of hiring translation equipment is extra, but roughly works out at £2 per headset per day/session.

As for further support in relation to services, the sub-website of the commissioner is useful: http://www.comisiynyddygymraeg.cymru/hybu/en/home/Pages/home.aspx

If there is any way in which PAVO can help, please don't hesitate to get in touch. Carl Cooper is a member of the Welsh Language Commissioner's Advisory Panel. Carl is happy to be used as an informed sounding board / facilitator.
