AFTAID offers direct financial relief to older people in distress. This is usually in emergency circumstances or to address a wide range of 'quality of life' issues which are not covered elsewhere.
AFTAID concentrates its efforts and resources directly to people aged 65 and over in the United Kingdom who are struggling to meet their basic needs.
Grants are not awarded directly to the applicant. The payment is made to the provider of the services or goods.
The ultimate beneficiary of the grant must be:
o At least 65 years of age;
o A UK citizen, resident in the United Kingdom; and
o On a lower income and have minimal savings.
A letter of support is required for all eligible applicants from a social worker, doctor or similar professional of the official care services. AFTAID awards emergency grants for anything that is required to take away hardship from the day-to-day life of an older person. Grants can include:
o Mobility scooters. o Walk-in showers. o Radiators. o Cookers. o Fridges. o Washing machines. o Beds. o Bedding. o Clothing. o Rise/recliner chair. o Tumble drier. o Small emergency house repairs. o Carpeting. o Essential or emergency house cleaning. o Microwave. o Rewiring. o Central heating boiler. o Video intercom. o Installation of phone line. o 'Blind' software for a PC. o Wheelchair access ramp. o Bath lift.
Grants are not available for:
• Ongoing or retrospective payments.
• Repayment of debts.
Applicants are required to fill in an online form which is available from the AFTAID website.
AFTAID will then send a full grant application form by return email. The application form must be completed and returned along with written support from an independent third party who is personally aware of the situation. This could be a doctor, health professional or Social Services.
Applications may be made at any time.
