Age Cymru & Age Alliance Wales focus groups

On behalf of Age Alliance Wales and Age Cymru

Following the success of our April focus groups for people aged 50+, Age Alliance Wales and Age Cymru will very soon be holding further events which may be of interest to you.

These meetings should allow us to gain older people’s opinions on a range of matters, including opportunities for learning and participation in the community, the impact of cuts to public services, housing issues, transport and the future of social care (and covering its cost). This will guide and assist the future work and campaigning priorities of Age Alliance Wales and its members (as was the case with the information we collected during April).

We already have a number of events scheduled for Wrexham, Bangor and Swansea (as set out below), with Newport events to be added soon - the previously used venue has closed for refurbishment. When the Newport venue is secured we will share that information with you.

Welsh language translations of all documents will be available for participants at each venue, with a Welsh language translator at the Bangor event. Refreshments will also be provided.

If possible participants should provide advance notice of attendance (but it should still be possible to just turn up on the day if some aren't able to commit in advance).  Call either me, or Sarah Lord if I'm unavailable, on 02920 431548.

We are also keen to speak with BAME people aged 50 and over, and LGBT+ people aged 50 and over. We have therefore set additional sessions for members of these groups, allowing the option of attending both these sessions and the meetings open to all aged 50+.

The Future of the Troubled Families Programme:

Supporting Families with Multiple Disadvantages
Central London
Tuesday 12th February 2019
Event DetailsEvent BrochureWebsiteRegister to Attend

The ‘Troubled Families Programme’ is a targeted government intervention for families with multiple problems including crime, anti-social behaviour, truancy, unemployment, mental health problems, and domestic abuse. The first phase of the programme ran from 2012 to 2015, during which period the Government claimed to have “turned around” 99% of the 117,910 families that had been identified as the target. However, subsequent independent evaluation analyses questioned the validity of these claims and the methodology underpinning them.  See above for more details

World Mental Health Day 2018

Powys Mental Health Blog
Earlier this month we celebrated World Mental Health Day on Wednesday 10 October. The World Federation for Mental Health is the driver behind this important awareness day.

The theme this year was “young people and mental health in a changing world.” So what better place to raise awareness about caring for the emotional health and wellbeing of young people than the two college bases in Powys – Newtown in the North, and Brecon in the South. We worked closely with colleagues at NPTC Group of Colleges, which is one of the largest Further Education providers in Wales, to run an information event at each campus.

WCVA Newsletter - 8 October 2018

Updates from WCVA

08 October 2018
Hello, and welcome to this week's newsletter.
The past few months we've been reshaping the organisation so that we can best deliver on the ambitious goals set out in our vision and mission. We're looking for a Manager to head up our new Marketing & Membership team. As Manager you'll be providing strong strategic leadership across our membership, marketing and communications work, ensuring delivery is supported by engaging learning and events programmes. You will also be leading an internal culture change, putting our members at the heart of everything we do. If you think you fit the bill, fill in an application by 15 October.
It's almost time for members to vote for their top eight nominees to join WCVA's board of trustees! We received an unprecedented 25 nominations to the board this year which is outstanding, thank you to everyone that got involved in the nomination process. We asked the nominees 'Why should WCVA's members vote for you to be a trustee?' - view their responses here and get your faves ready for when voting opens on 30 October.
Thanks for reading, we'll see you all again next week.
