Improving Retention of Care Workers

Social Care Wales have commissioned Skills for Care to facilitate a regional workshop focused on improving the retention of care workers.

The key outcomes and objectives for the workshops are:

· understand what values based recruitment and retention is and how to apply it to your organisation

· understand how to develop values based recruitment and retention practices to attract and retain the right people
understand what workplace culture is and the importance of leading and developing a positive workplace culture to embed organisational values
understand the factors that support workforce retention and what practical changes could be implemented

The target audience should be individuals who are able to influence change in their workplace or organisation. This might include senior managers, registered managers, managers of services or human resources managers.

The programme will cover


· Setting the Scene-establishing the current context, challenges and opportunities

· Retention - what we know works, understanding the secrets of success and what social care providers and care staff have identified as most important for retention

· Values and behaviours – values-based recruitment and retention (VBR) - What workplace values are and the benefits

· How to work with others to develop, agree and communicate your workplace values

· How practical changes can be made that will increase retention and improve staff commitment and engagement

· Creating a positive workspace culture- an overview of what a workplace culture is and the importance of a positive workplace culture for implementing values

· Leadership and building your team- Ideas on leading the team and the development of a positive workplace culture where values will be implemented and lived and staff feel valued and involved

· Action planning and next steps- build and action plan that can be taken back and implemented in each service

How the day will run

This is a very interactive workshop with participation and activities throughout the day, giving delegates a chance to discuss the knowledge content presented, reflect on their own practice and share ideas and gain best practice knowledge both from the facilitators and other delegates.

It will run from a 9am for 9.30 start until 3.30pm with breaks throughout the day. Refreshments will be provided but delegates need to bring their own packed lunch.
