Powys Teaching Health Board and Powys County Council seek views on draft Health and Care Strategy for Powys

http://www.powysthb.wales.nhs.uk/health-and-care-strategy

Powys Teaching Health Board and Powys County Council have today published their first ever draft Health and Care Strategy for Powys.

Based on insights gathered from surveys, workshops and focus groups across the county the draft strategy sets out a high level vision for the future of health and care to 2027 and beyond. Public engagement on the draft strategy continues over the coming months and local communities are encouraged to have their say.

Publishing the draft strategy today (25 January 2017), Professor Vivienne Harpwood, Chair of Powys Teaching Health Board, and Cllr Barry Thomas, Leader of Powys County Council, said:

“We are delighted to introduce our draft Health and Care Strategy.

“Importantly, our organisations are working together with key partners and the people of Powys to plan for the future of health and care.

“We all know that these are challenging times, particularly with the prolonged period of austerity and the changing needs of the people of Powys. We also know that Powys is a place where we aspire to help improve the wellbeing of all people. This is why this draft strategy seeks to enable children and young people to ‘Start Well’, for people to ‘Live Well’ and older people to ‘Age Well’.

“Over 1000 people have contributed in some way to the development of this strategy so far and we would really value views on what has been produced.

“Whilst it doesn’t describe the detail of the developments at this stage, it does outline the direction we feel is important to take. Promoting wellbeing; offering early help and support to people; tackling the big four diseases that limit life; and providing joined up care are the key areas that we suggest become priorities for action. This means that we will spend more time and effort helping people to stay well, to help them act early to prevent ill health and get support, and where care and treatment is required that we work with people to ensure care is joined up and based on what matters most to the individual.

“We also want to provide as much care as possible in Powys. There has been real success over the last few years with the introduction of new services, and we feel that—with the development of new technology, for example—we could do more in Powys. We know that some people will continue to need to travel for services out of county, but we will focus on improving access wherever possible.

“We would like to thank everyone who has helped to shape this strategy so far. We hope you enjoy reading the work so far and welcome your comments on how we could improve it further.”

More information about the strategy is available from a dedicated web page at http://bit.ly/powyshcs There will also be opportunities to get involved via social media including through the #PowysHCS hashtag on Twitter.

Ovarian cancer awareness training

Ovarian cancer is the UK’s deadliest gynaecological disease, with more than 7,000 new cases diagnosed each year. It takes the life of a woman every two hours. Sadly, the survival rate is lower in Wales than the rest of the UK.

Ovarian Cancer Action is working hard to raise awareness of Ovarian Cancer in Wales. The charity is looking to recruit a number of Voices - volunteers who have some experience of the impact of ovarian cancer – to tell their stories and help make some noise about the disease.

Ovarian Cancer Action is running a training session in Cardiff in February that aims to equip volunteers with everything you need to go out and deliver awareness presentations with confidence. The session is free and travel expenses can be reimbursed.

If you are interested in becoming an Ovarian Cancer Action volunteer then please contact Alicia Roberts (Wales Regional Officer) on 07761511927 or Alicia@ovarian.org.uk

If you can help spread awareness of the disease by displaying information leaflets or posters please contact Alicia or request them on the Ovarian Cancer Action website at http://ovarian.org.uk/what-we-want/raising-awareness-of-ovarian-cancer/order-awareness-materials

Lower Your Risk of Stroke campaign.

Lower Your Risk of Stroke is a national stroke awareness campaign that will run from Monday 16 January to 31 March 2017.

In Wales, more than 7,000 people have a stroke each year and it is one of the leading causes of severe adult disability. There are over 65,100 people in Wales and 1.2 million people in the UK living with the effects of stroke.

The campaign, led by the Stroke Association, will raise awareness of the number of strokes caused by high blood pressure, Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and Transient Ischaemic Attacks (TIAs), also known as mini-strokes.

By taking action on three of the biggest stroke risk factors, the number of strokes across Wales could be reduced by up to 50%. The campaign asks people to do three simple things:

· Get their blood pressure checked once a year.
· Check their pulse for any irregularity.
· Seek medical attention immediately should they experience any stroke symptoms such as facial weakness, arm weakness or slurred speech.

They have created a number of items that they hope you will be able to utilise to help us spread the word.

Older People in Community Hospitals: Avoiding Boredom and Loneliness

In late November and early December of this year, CHC members visited 48 wards in community hospitals across Wales. They spoke to older people and staff to find out what was provided to alleviate boredom, increase socialisation and reduce loneliness for people experiencing longer stays.

We heard from people who had a positive experience of wards that provided a wide range of activities to support interaction. On the other hand they heard from many people who had experienced wards that were crowded, provided few or no activities and were described to them as barren and depressing.

They found that books, newspapers, crafts and use of hand held devices such as phones and tablets were popular ways for people to spend their time. Whilst some areas invested time and resources to support such activities others were reluctant to do so, often due to concerns over cross infection.

Wards without space to share meals or activities contributed in some instances to people feeling bored and isolated. Missing, broken or inappropriate equipment meant that access to television or radio could also be limited and all too frequently those without visitors did not have access to their own choice of clothes or personal items.

Above all, they found that positive staff attitudes made a significant difference to the ward environment. They found some wards that encouraged collective activity including meals, watching films or craft. CHCs believe that NHS staff should challenge themselves and learn from each other to provide creative and innovative activities that meet individual need, support wellbeing and enable people to maintain their independence.

Quit For Them Campaign - Launching in Newtown and Welshpool in January 2017

In January 2017 an exciting new smoking cessation campaign entitled ‘Quit for Them’ was launched in Newtown and Welshpool. The campaign, which is primarily digital, targets parents and grandparents and aims to encourage and support as many adults as possible to quit smoking. Evidence suggests that if we can get adults to quit, children and young people are less likely to start smoking.

The Quit for them campaign was designed by Social Change UK and has been implemented across North Wales since October 2015. The campaign has already helped hundreds of smokers in North Wales to access the support they need to successfully quit smoking.

The Quit for Them campaign is being promoted on facebook throughout Newtown and Welshpool and all smokers are being encouraged to ‘like’ the page so that they can receive support and advice around quitting smoking. It is a community site where smokers can support each other and get tips and advice from smokers and non-smokers and professionals. Smokers can order free quit kits, access a comprehensive guide to local services and download vouchers that can be redeemed at local pharmacies for nicotine replacement therapy and support.

Stuart Bourne (Deputy Director of Public Health in Powys) stated, “We are launching the campaign in January to coincide with New Year’s resolutions and therefore optimise the effects of individuals heightened motivation to quit smoking. The campaign has had huge success in North Wales, and we hope to see this replicated in Newtown and Welshpool. The Quit for them website, (www.quit.wales) Facebook page (www.facebook.com/quitforthem) and downloadable resources will ensure that smokers can access the right support to make their quit as successful as possible.”

Smokers who access the site will be directed to free cessation support services in Powys including local pharmacies and Stop Smoking Wales. For more information, please visit the facebook page, website or contact Powys Public Health Team on 01874 712728.

Fertility Network UK - Information & Support in Wales

During 2016 Fertility Network UK launched a Wales-specific service, directly providing free and impartial support and information to over 100 men and women in Wales.

As the nation’s leading patient-focused fertility charity they go forward into 2017 continuing to provide up to date information and a listening ear. They are there on a practical and emotional level and understand the widespread impact of infertility; if you feel that anyone you work with and support could benefit from a little extra help at what is an extremely isolating time then please let them know about Fertility Network UK and share this information with your networks.

Peer support groups: There are currently two peer support groups running in South Wales. Both groups welcome anyone affected by a fertility issue, both individuals and couples and offer the chance for people to get together to offer each other much needed support. Often groups are joined by an expert in the field of fertility who answers questions in a non-clinical environment.

· A Swansea group meets at 6.30pm on the first Wednesday of every month at the Canolfan Gorseinon Centre, Millers Drive, Gorseinon, Swansea.
· The Cardiff group meets at 6.30pm on the second Wednesday of every month in Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff.

For more information about these groups I can be contacted at alice@fertilitynetworkuk.org

Patient information:   If you would like information/leaflets for people to access then let them know and they will arrange delivery.

Individuals can be affected physically, emotionally, socially and financially by infertility. Family, friends, relationships and work can all suffer and feelings of depression, sadness, frustration, anger, helplessness and isolation are all common. It’s really important that those who may benefit from a little extra support learn about this free service available to them.

In the Absence of Silence - Domestic Abuse Survivors

The performance piece ‘in the absence of silence’ that is at the heart of the project with survivors of domestic abuse being undertaken at The Welfare in Ystradgynlais is visiting the Theatre on the evening of Friday 3rd February.

This piece of drama was created by survivors of domestic abuse in South Gwynedd and developed with De Gwynedd Domestic Abuse Service. They are also very fortunate to be working with world renowned Theatre Company, Chickenshed, which means this is also a very high quality piece of theatre.

The piece works as a drama in its own right, but also serves as a training opportunity for anyone wanting to find out more about domestic abuse. The performance will be followed by a Question and Answer session with the theatre company and people involved in domestic abuse services.

Anticipating Future Accommodation Needs for Older People in Powys

We all want to stay in our own home, close to our family and friends and the communities we dearly love and cherish.

But how many of us plan for the future? How do we know what type of accommodation we will need if we become ill, injured or frail? Unable to work? What can we afford? And will we still be close to family and friends, able to be a valued member of a community.

These are many questions we should be asking ourselves, but many of us don’t. It’s not a priority given the day to day pressures of work and family life. We don’t have a crystal ball that can see into the future, but it’s up to us as individuals and collectively as families to start planning for our future needs as early as possible.

The council and its partners have a big part to play in our future planning by ensuring the right accommodation is available for our rapidly increasing number of older people in Powys. This is one of the biggest challenges facing commissioners and housing providers in the future.

During 2016, Powys County Council embarked on a county wide engagement exercise to seek the views of older people on the current and future demand of older person’s accommodation and residential care provision across Powys.

Working collaboratively with our partners Age Cymru, Credu (Powys Carers), the council’s Housing Service and Powys Association of Volunteer Organisations (PAVO) we were able to draw in a wide range of views from a broad spectrum of stakeholders.

This included residents and families, health and social care professionals from both Powys County Council and Powys Teaching Health Board, private organisations who deliver care and support, the third sector and forums who represent older people in Powys.

Presentations were given to members, town councillors and focus groups across Powys with scenario based questions to create discussion and feedback. There were face to face meetings with residents and staff that gave the project team invaluable feedback when compiling the report.

Social media also played a big part in advertising the online/paper surveys for people and groups who were unable to attend any of the meetings.

Accessing Public Buildings

Hayley Beavan works for Disability Powys as an Access and Outreach Worker and is experiencing difficulty in promoting the Access Service provided by experienced and trained access volunteers.

Powys Access Groups are keen to promote their existence, and the help they can provide to organisations on access to public buildings and environments.

Access Groups aim to improve access to buildings, services and information, and make a positive contribution to communities enabling accessibility for all.

The Groups are run by volunteers with physical disabilities, sensory impairments and varied life experiences, including building, design, occupational therapy and nursing.  The groups undertake local projects within their communities aimed at improving accessibility for all.

Early this year 22 volunteers mainly, attended specialised a 2 day access training course provided by experienced access consultants funding by the lottery.

They are able to undertake access audits of facilities, and provide suggestions on access improvements.  They provide a friendly and approachable service.  They are  there to help.

If you have any queries please contact Hayley Beavan at hbeavan@disabilitypowys.org.uk.

Quit for Them Campaign Launches in Powys
