MALE SUICIDE PREVENTION PLEDGE LAUNCH
ORIEL, The Senedd, Cardiff – 1ST APRIL 2019
12.00PM – 1.00PM
Sponsored by Eluned Morgan AM
In Wales, 360 people took their own life in 2017. 77% of these were men.
Men in rural communities are particularly at risk from suicide.
It is the biggest single cause of death in men under 40, even greater than road traffic accidents or cancer.
This stark evidence has prompted Mid Powys Mind to develop an important new resource; a suicide prevention pledge card designed to reassure men that an open approach to suicide is the best way to help prevent it.
The Assembly’s Health & Social Care Committee recently called for male suicide to be declared a ‘national emergency’, stating that everyone should play their part in reaching out and offering support to those in need.
“We need to create safe spaces for men to talk about their feelings and mental health”, says Welsh Premier League football legend Neville Southall, who has thrown his weight behind the campaign.
“I am looking forward to speaking at this event and to helping raise awareness around this important issue.
“Men sometimes aren’t comfortable reaching out to talk about their struggles with mental health. You can help someone who may be struggling with suicidal ideation by simply listening, talking with them and checking in on them. You don’t need to be a super hero, just a super human who cares!
“If you have experienced feelings of depression or suicidal ideation before, it may be helpful to share your stories and experiences with others – early intervention can save lives.”
