The effect of a hospital stay can be catastrophic for a person with dementia as it was for the man whose experience prompted this campaign. John's Campaign calls for the families and carers of people with dementia to have the same rights as the parents of sick children, and be allowed to remain with them in hospital for as many hours of the day and night as is humanly possible.

Expectations being placed upon the sector to support people who will no longer be eligible for social care
Many thanks to those who have already completed this survey. If you haven't yet done so, your response would be hugely useful and much appreciated. Already, we are able to evidence a number of key messages e.g. the need for longer term funding arrangements and capacity issues relating to an expectation to take on more clients etc.
By completing this brief questionnaire, you will be able to highlight any additional resources or help your organisation and/or service will need in order to provide the sustainable, safe and reliable support that is needed. The questionnaire will take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

Improving Wellbeing and Providing Better Value for Public Money - Housing & Sport
This seminar is aimed at public and third sector officers working in Health, Housing, and Social Care.
Wellbeing is more than just health. The quality of both housing and physical activity has a major impact. This seminar brings together experts that have combined aspects of housing and physical activity to provide substantial benefits to the wellbeing of the people of Wales which reduces on-going costs.
There are major changes afoot in the public sector, with the Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill meaning that organisations will have to evidence how they are balancing short term and long term needs, taking an integrated approach; involving those with an interest; acting in collaboration; and adopting preventive thinking.
If you’re reviewing your service in light of financial challenges, they’ve put together a seminar that highlights approaches that focus on service users and have resulted in an improved service or cost reduction. This shared learning seminar will provide tried and tested examples of where organisations have worked together to help people increase their wellbeing. These models come with evidence of their effectiveness and lend themselves to the delivery of a number of different services.

Adult Social Services join Powys People Direct
From March 31, 2015 Adult Social Services will be joining Powys People Direct, the council’s single telephone number for children and adults information and support services.
Powys People Direct was successfully launched across the county in autumn 2014 for children, young people and families. Over the last four months, the new number has been very successful for children and families contacting council services such as the Family Information Service (FIS), disability services and Team Around the Family (TAF).
From the end of March, anyone wishing to contact the council with an enquiry for adult support will be able to access a range of services for adults, older people, sensory impairment and learning/physical disability services as well as many others.
Lower Your Risk of Stroke
Stroke is the third single largest cause of death in the UK yet up to half could be prevented by controlling blood pressure, treating an irregular heartbeat and acting on transient ischeamic attacks (TIAs).
As you know, Lower Your Risk of Stroke is a national campaign being coordinated by the Stroke Association and Public Health Wales which aims to raise awareness of stroke specific risk factors and encourage the public to take action to reduce their risk. In particular the campaign promotes the importance of:
· Getting your blood pressure tested;
· Checking your pulse; and
· Not ignoring a TIA or “funny turn”
On the 10th of February the Deputy Minister for Health will be launching the Community Pharmacy element of the campaign in Cardiff. Thereafter, during February and March we will be inviting the public to visit their local pharmacy to take our Lower Your Risk of Stroke quiz.
In support of the campaign we have asked General Practices; NHS Dental Practices; Community Optometry Practices, hospitals and Libraries in Wales to display posters in their public areas.
The campaign is a partnership with Welsh Government, Community Pharmacy Wales, the Stroke Implementation Group, the seven Health Boards, Public Health Wales and is supported by the Welsh Centre for Pharmacy Professional Education (WCPPE) at Cardiff University and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in Wales (RPS).
If you would like further details of the campaign or information about the campaign materials, including the Lower Your Risk of Stroke quiz, please contact Lucy Thomas on: lucy.thomas@stroke.org.uk; or Rebecca Chamberlain: rebecca.chamberlain@stroke.org.uk

Latest Adult Care Bulletin
This month’s bulletin looks at how a community can make a real difference for people suffering with dementia.
In an example of co-production, the Brecon community is working closely with the Powys Health and Adult Social Care Integrated Leadership Board, the Police and Fire service to meet the needs of those living with dementia in and around the town.
The bulletin explains what is like for someone living with dementia and the effect it has on day to day living. Becoming a dementia friend to a family member, friend or someone in need of support is hugely rewarding, and the Brecon Dementia Friendly Community are encouraging members of the town to get involved. Shop keepers, hair dressers and bank managers to name but a few have all signed up to further their knowledge of the illness, recognise early signs, and are able to support people in the community who are going about their daily lives.
Councillor Dawn Bailey has recently been appointed Dementia Champion for the council. As the councillor develops her role in the community, news of her experiences of working with citizens living with dementia and the impact it has on local communities will be brought to you.
Brecon is the first town in Powys to become a dementia friendly community, but hopefully it won’t be the last. If you would like your town, village or community to be dementia friendly and support your family member or friend, then more information of how to get involved and sign up can be found at http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/site/scripts/documents.php?categoryID=200436

What is the capacity of the third sector?
Please help PAVO to map this by completing the below questionnaire.
The mapping survey is important particularly in relation to the changing eligibility criteria for Social Care. Expectations are being placed upon the sector to support people who will no longer be eligible for social care. In particular, the strategy refers to third sector befriending services, information services and advocacy services.
This will help to highlight any additional resources or help your organisation and/or service will need in order to provide the sustainable, safe and reliable support that is needed.

‘What’s New with Well-Being in Powys?
Organisations from across Powys attended the Health and Social Care Network event on 13th and 14th January to find out ‘What’s New with Well-Being in Powys?’
The events were held at venues in Newtown and Brecon and despite the challenging weather conditions around 40 people attended.
Delighted to say there are now 20 more Dementia Friends in Powys helping towards our target of a Dementia Friendly Powys, thanks to a session ran by PAVO’s Dementia Champion Trish Buchan. We would also like to thank Vanessa Garwood, Alzheimer’s Society for her tips on communicating with people with Dementia – interesting food for thought!
Our biggest thanks to everyone who contributed to discussions around the changes to the Social Care & Well Being Act. There is a lot of great work going on in the voluntary sector to support people in Powys but also, concern that we may not be ready for the added pressure resulting from the changes to how people are assessed and their needs met.
Everyone felt that the expectations on the sector to meet the increase in demand was unrealistic, however all participants would be happy to be more involved in planning discussions with our statutory partners to ensure that there is capacity to make sure services can continue to be provided to those in need.
People found these events an excellent and much needed opportunity for networking so watch this space for further networking and information events. If you have any suggestions for future events of the Health and Social Care Network, please contact us. Tel: 01597 822191 Email: ruth.middleton@pavo. org.uk

Digital stories - Glan Irfon
A series of digital stories have been developed to highlight health and social care centre, Glan Irfon.
The film’s aim is to promote the council, health board and voluntary sector’s collaborative and integrated work to improve the health and wellbeing of citizens to support their independence, and to be able to do the things that matter and have the very best quality of life.
The films have been designed to show local residents in the Builth and Llanwrtyd Wells area along with the Powys health and social care community the benefits of receiving care close to their home and community from the perspective of two patients who have stayed at the centre.
Granville and Kathleen’s story is not unfamiliar to anyone who has had time to recover and recuperate at the centre, and the stories give anyone who is due to visit the centre a real life insight into what it looks and feels like prior to staying.
The stories also provide a professional perspective from the multi-disciplinary team that includes district nurses, social services and BUPA.
The stories can be viewed at http://www.powys.gov.uk/en/adult-social-care/integrating-health-and-social-care/glan-irfon-bringing-health-and-social-care-together/
