Latest Adult Care Bulletin

This month’s bulletin looks at how a community can make a real difference for people suffering with dementia.

In an example of co-production, the Brecon community is working closely with the Powys Health and Adult Social Care Integrated Leadership Board, the Police and Fire service to meet the needs of those living with dementia in and around the town.

The bulletin explains what is like for someone living with dementia and the effect it has on day to day living. Becoming a dementia friend to a family member, friend or someone in need of support is hugely rewarding, and the Brecon Dementia Friendly Community are encouraging members of the town to get involved. Shop keepers, hair dressers and bank managers to name but a few have all signed up to further their knowledge of the illness, recognise early signs, and are able to support people in the community who are going about their daily lives.

Councillor Dawn Bailey has recently been appointed Dementia Champion for the council. As the councillor develops her role in the community,  news of her experiences of working with citizens living with dementia and the impact it has on local communities will be brought to you.

Brecon is the first town in Powys to become a dementia friendly community, but hopefully it won’t be the last. If you would like your town, village or community to be dementia friendly and support your family member or friend, then more information of how to get involved and sign up can be found at http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/site/scripts/documents.php?categoryID=200436
