The Herbert Protocol - Safe and Found

The All Wales Blue Light Dementia Group gets geared up for action for Dementia Action Week

Working together for Dementia Action Week 2019, the All Wales Blue Light Dementia Group are promoting the Herbert Protocol.

The Herbert Protocol is a national scheme introduced by the police in partnership with other agencies which encourages carers and families to compile information which can be used in the event of someone living with dementia going missing.

Carers, family members and friends can complete forms in advance, recording important details about a person, such as photographs, medical information, mobile numbers, previous addresses, places previously found etc.  In the event of someone going missing, the form can be easily handed to the police to reduce the time taken in gathering this information.

The Herbert Protocol scheme is named after George Herbert, a war veteran of the Normandy landings, who lived with dementia. George Herbert died whilst 'missing', trying to find his childhood home.

Jason Ghalamkary from Gwent Police Force, and a member of the All Wales Blue Light Dementia Group says that “the protocol will help give emergency services the best possible information if they need to be involved in searching for someone living with dementia. We would encourage anyone who knows someone living with dementia to sign up to the scheme”.

If you would like to sign up to the Herbert Protocol, visit your local police station, visit your Police Service website, or speak to your local Neighbourhood Team.
